ArchiTORTURE or no?

I am a to-be 2nd year architecture student in the UK (currently surviving summer) and I had always been both an academic and an artist/designer.

Whilst deciding on a course pre-uni, I was between engineering and architecture. In my mind:

Engineering = Few women. You're a woman! Everyone will love you and HIRE YOU!
Architecture = You'll actually enjoy this one and can work to your strengths.

The winner is obvious and I definitely made the right choice.

First year was amazing. I mean, sure there were a handful of all-nighters and a hefty workload as predicted, but I made some pretty good friends in studio who I fought those battles with.

But now that second year is around the corner I can't help but feel slightly nervous.

All of a sudden I remember how those third years laughed and told me it was a bad choice, and how the guy from our letting agent told us about his best friend, a 6th year architecture student, never leaves his room other than for studio.

Then there are these bad guys posted everywhere:

It's off-putting, and to make matters worse the pay won't be all that great at the end of it either.

Why am I doing this?

In my opinion, the good outweighs the bad.

Architecture studio is something I feel thankful to experience and it's a place where I have met some amazing like-minded people. I'm never left bored studying from a book all day. I actually enjoy the work. I get to look all hipster carrying a drawing tube and models across campus. Then there is that feeling of looking through your completed portfolio of work that you stayed up two days to complete:

...until your tutor slates it.

But then again we all know the serious business begins in second year (see 3rd image).

Also, I lied. I'm not nervous :)

Moni xo
